Couldn't believe it was written when it was. Talked about so much that happened almost a century later. Very interesting. It made me think a lot. There was a lot to have discussions about.

I bought this for a university class, not thinking much of it at the time. After reading it though, I found it to be fantastic. So detailed, and when the detail is left out there is a thoughtful reason for it. As much as I do not read a novel twice, I have a feeling this one will get a second read.

There are two parts to this classic. There is the play itself. And there is the extensive introduction material with its background and explanatory text. The play itself is both a very interesting perspective on early thinking about man's relationship with modern technology and a critical reflection on man and his humanity. (Although it isn't terribly deep in its reflection.)The extensive introduction is a cornucopia of information about the author as well as many events in Europe between the two wars.In its time this was a worldwide sensation. Obviously the fact that it caught the whole world's attention attests to its historical significance. Who hasn't heard of Robots?Overall this should be required reading for anyone interested in either modern literature or science fiction or dystopian fiction.

Other reviewers have said great things about the play, and it deserves them. But it's as if it were laid out automatically and no one even bothered to proofread it. There are punctuation problems throughout the book, and they're pervasive enough to prevent me from enjoying it. I was thinking about using this edition for the course on science fiction this summer, but I've decided to use the free available online edition and put it in a course reader instead of using this one.

"R.U.R." or Rossum's Universal Robots is a simple play by Czech science fiction and social commentator Karel Capek. It was first published in 1920 and was probably the first work to use the term "robot." In this short and simple play, the author presages later works by Asimov that introduced the three laws of robotics which were central to his thoughts of what could go wrong if man invented a mechanical version of himself.Capek's many books all carry the central theme of man's darkness that appears when he thinks too simplistically and ignores the consequences of seemingly logical (at the time) acts. "R.U.R." is no exception. Yes, this short play is written tongue-in-cheek, with plenty of humor, but a dark undercurrent is always present. Although based in science fiction, Capek deals mainly with social commentary. As a pure work, this play is too short and simplistic, but is elevated to four stars when the time period in which it was written is considered. One of his other works, "The Absolute at Large" is probably his best.

An updated translation and adaptation used by the Youtube version by the Edward Alderton Theatre. Better than the earlier ones but does not have all of the changes as the production.A must read for techies and teachers.

I like the story, but it's not a novel but a scrip for a play so it reads as a script.

This Czech play was the source of the word "robot" from 1920. This is the first English translation from 1923. As I see more and more machines designed to make man's work unnecessary, I had to read it.A "must read" for every techie and school teacher (I am a computer systems professor). There is a very good modern interpretation from the Edward Alderton Theatre on Youtube.
