About the Author
Arthur Sylvester is a native southern Californian, whose eyes were opened to geology by high school biology class trips to the Colorado Plateau. With a focus on earth sciences, he earned a BA at Pomona College and an MA and PhD at UCLA. After graduate school, he joined a team of Shell Development Company research geologists to study the tectonic history of the Pacific margin of the United States. UC Santa Barbara lured him from Shell to teach courses in structural geology, field geology, and petrology. His academic research focused on various structural, seismic, and igneous rock problems in the Colorado and Mojave Deserts, the Transverse Ranges, and the Lake Tahoe region, as well as in Norway and southern Italy. He retired from active teaching in 2003.

Finally! I've been waiting for this book since the early 1990s, and it was worth the wait. You won't often see a more beautiful geology handbook. It is profusely illustrated with wonderful color photographs and really helpful color maps, charts and diagrams. These are so critical for we mere mortals trying to understand the landscape before us. The book is up to date and incorporates new findings. It has a list of natural history sites and museums, a glossary and an extensive bibliography. I highly recommend it. I can't wait to hit the road and I'll be taking my copy with me.
Because of its more recent publication, this Roadside Geology includes recent findings from tectonic related studies and is filled with color photos( unlike R.G.s from only 3-4 years ago). The newly updated Northern and Central California R.G. also includes color photos. The color photos are especially important because a reader may never get to all the places mentioned in the book and the photos may be the readers only experience of that place.
I've bought many of the Roadside Geology series through amazon, so this is going to be a boilerplate review. I bought the first book in the series when there was only one book, and enjoyed it immensely. The books are very readable, and many of the spots mentioned are worth a stop. A must have if you want to know what the rocks are without becoming a geologist.
These books - "Roadside Geology of Southern California" and "Roadside Geology of Northern California" - are fabulous. Detailed drawings, charts, photos and maps on almost every page. We're seeing California in a whole new light when we drive, and enjoy looking up details of the geological features around us.
Love this book. Geologically Southern California has always seemed like a gigsaw puzzle and this book really sorts it all out. We finally know what we are driving by. If you want to show off to your children and really give them something to look at on vacation this is the book to read.
Nice overview of SoCal geology--with excellent maps, charts, and illustrations--providing an up-to-date summary of the region's formation and a good sampling of roadside sites shaped by various geological processes. A worthy investment for anyone interested in SoCal natural history, or looking to make road trips more educational.
Lot of good information in this book. If you're into geology and you live in California you should probably purchase this book.
We are full-time RVers and very interested in Geology. We use these Roadside Geology of --------State----. since 2002. Every state has excellent description by Hwy # and milepost #. Makes traveling much more interesting.
