I've never met or spoken to Barry Meadow, and while I know Ken Massa, I haven't asked for anything (nor will i take anything) in return for my opinion of his software program. In fact, both will first learn about this review after it's been posted."The Skeptical Handicapper" is written in Mr. Meadows' usual style As Mr. Meadows is wont to do, the book sometimes strays afield and/or meanders about. It's very easy for an impatient person to say "To heck with this stupid book!" --- and stop reading and forget about it.If you're looking for a magic system, a sequence of factors that produce a profit, or some mindless, robotic, or automatic way to make money, this isn't the book for you ---- and nothing else that I know of will accomplish that, either. The various syndicates/"whales" and the sharp players have found these things and pounded them into underlays. There's no magic box that makes you money. You'll do well to not waste your time searching for one.That doesn't mean the there isn't money to be made. It's there, but it requires work. For those who are more patient and who seriously want to improve their chances of showing a profit at the end of the year, this book is well-worth the price (or even TEN TIMES the price). Everybody should learn things from this book---but the reader MUST be patient and take the time to read and understand what's written. It may help to take some notes, but the reader shouldn't get bogged down in the notes to the point where the bigger picture is missed. This is a voluminous work that covers many topics, much data, and has many ideas. The reader is not likely to absorb everything in one reading. I personally recommend reading the book to get the general concepts on the first go-through, and then rereading it in more detail to pick up the finer points. It will require some work and patience to do this, but it's worth the effort for any serious player to do so. I've been playing for 45 years, and I am far from a neophyte; that said, there were a lot of ideas and concepts that made me think about or rethink certain things.The author is an advocate of trip handicapping, but that's only one focus of the book. TThere are many tables in the book, most of those provided by Ken Massa, the author of the HTR program (URLs aren't allowed, but you can Google "HTR2" to find Mr. Massa's site; his software is user-friendly, far-reaching, and overall excellent, and it's probably used by more serious players than any other offered). Almost any way you handicap that uses data can be found in HTR. It's a quality operation: one I first subscribed to in 2000. End of commercial.The main point of the book, repeated over and over, is this: (put simply) the general idea is not to find the winner but to find value. The author offers much insight on how to do this, and it does take some work to put it into practice. Nothing is easy about winning at thoroughbred racing, but the opportunities do exist.Mr. Meadows is also very candid in his assessment of people, services, track management, etc., some he believes are good and worthwhile, some he doesn't care for. For what it's worth, I agree with most of his assessments.Anybody, from a novice player to a 40+ year winning veteran, will find content in this book that will help their play. What you will NOT find, and Mr. Meadows stresses this often, is a magic formula that cranks out winners. None such exist, and Mr. Meadows makes that very clear. If you're looking for a magic formula, this isn't it. If you want to improve your "game," I highly recommend it.
