This is one of the Very Best Instruction Boosk on how to Paint Portraits. Helen Van Wyk did a Wonderful Job of showing step by step, how to do it. It's a Classic!
Art is a personal thing of course and everyone has their opinions on how to do something most effectively. I've found that the way I paint is very much in keeping with the Van Wyk method. I liked this book very much and it helped me to think about what I was already doing and how I could fine-tune my technique and work a painting less. I think working a painting too much is one of the biggest issues that the new painter must learn to overcome. This book helped me in that regard and maybe it can be helpful to you too.
Basic instructional book that teach the fundamental of how to paint a portrait. I recommend this book to all young people an old people who want to learn more about the portrait technique. I am new to oil painting and found this book very helpful in many areas. It covers working with live models , when and how to do this. How to begin your painting, color and many other areas in your painting. I think it will be of great help for my success in oil painting. It does not cover types of paint to use but it clearly tells you that is not the books purpose. I have only had it for a few weeks but have already gone thru it completely and feel like I have learned quite a lot.
anything that Helen Van Wyk did was perfection. Stunning and excellent book .... any of her books and dvds are superb. She was a true artist from the old school and a master at her craft.
I bought this book as a gift for my brother who is an artist. He had been looking for this book and since it is out of print it is hard to find. He was surprised and very happy to receive this book. He says it is an excellent textbook for learning how to paint portraits. He loves it and refers to it often. If you know someone who is learning how to paint, this is a great book to learn from.
I find all of Helen Van Wyk's books to be tremendously helpful. This book on painting portraits is no exception. Packed with tips and lots of examples, it would be an excellent addition to any oil painter's library. The tips also apply to other mediums such as watercolor, so you don't necessarily have to paint in oil to benefit from them.
